Ariel from The Little Mermaid was meant to have curly hair, but the technology wasn't good enough for what the animators had in mind. So, Merida is a princess in that she is the princess of her clan, but there would have been many clans living in close quarters and so many other ruling families. Merida and her family live in a walled castle on the edge of a cliff. This is not entirely a real Scottish castle, but its design is based on Dunnottar Castle in Aberdeenshire.
