To start off, i am essentially against this Auction House, since it comes down to buying power, i'll get to that later. For me, that implied that Blizzard has technically legalized a black market they previously claimed to prevent in Diablo II.
The basic rule of a free market economic system is that the higher the supply in relation to demand, the lower the price. In reality, i predict that farmers will flood the AH with very large quantities of both gold and particular items. That leads to a situation where the market is generally ruled by the lowest bidder, namely the farmers. Because they are now in direct competition with eachother, that means the principle of undercutting your competition comes into play.
Diffirent goldfarmers will try to keep the lowest market offer and will systematically undercut the competition by lowering their price. With the large quantities of farmer items on the AH, the market will very quikcly oversaturate. This, accordinly, creates a situation where any individual player will never be able to outsell the ruling market group ref. The euphoria of a large amount of players that can now "earn money through auctioning items seems utterly void in my opinion.
The above mentioned article clearly states that professional farmers have no risk of being sanctioned which is only normal, they are, in the end, just playing the game with a personal objective.
However, their argument as to why farmers will not be a problems seems relatively cheap and unfunded to me. I've already explained my interpretation of what would happen in a competitive enviroment and it would change nothing to the situation. The fact that the AH is anonymous is also completely void for an argument. As it does not matter if you know who is selling.
Farmers do not need to know any persons identity to undercut. And wether or not you are buying from a real player or a goldfarmers gives no benefit in any kind. Besides the actual mechanic of the RMAH, a feature like this also has an impact on players who don't want to participate.
Perhaps far-sought, but therefore not less realistic is a change of user base mentality. When it comes down to money, people will generally start looking at a cent.
If 2 versions of item X are on sale, the the one that is 1 cent cheaper is naturally the first that will get bought. Now, with the illusion of gaining money by puitting everything on the Ah, i believe that the general mentality will shift from giving items to your teammates when you can't use them, to a situation where you would first consider putting it on the RMAH, in hope of getting some money out of it.
But this concern is of course, very subjective. Keep me logged in on this device Forgot your username or password? Don't have an account? Sign up for free! What do you need help on? Cancel X.
